It is the responsibility of all University of Utah supervisors and managers to ensure that plans are in place for assisting persons with disabilities within their operations in the event of evacuation. Plans should be in writing, provide appropriate levels of backup and be distributed to all individuals working in the department/unit. Persons with disabilities must have significant input into the plans, as they are best aware of the level and type of assistance needed.

    General Guidelines:

    • Use of an elevator to evacuate individuals needing assistance is appropriate, BUT NEVER IN THE CASE OF FIRE OR EARTHQUAKE.
    • Individuals needing assistance are encouraged to request assistance from others in the area.
    • If assistance is not immediately available, individuals needing assistance should stay in the exit corridor or the stairway landing until rescued.
    • Everyone is urged to carry a whistle or have other means of attracting the attention of others.
