Fire Extinguisher Training

Fire Extinguishers are located every 150 feet in the corridors of all buildings at the University. When used appropriately by a trained team, they can be very effective tools for extinguishing small fires. There are a couple of basic rules to know about fire extinguishers:
  • Know how to properly use your fire extinguisher.
  • Always notify the fire department before fighting a fire. Activate the building alarm system immediately upon discovering a fire.
  • Do not attempt to extinguish the fire yourself, always have a "buddy" to assist.
  • Never turn away from a fire you have extinguished until you are out of the area.
  • Remember all extinguishers are not the same. Look at the pictures or letter on the extinguisher, it will indicate what types of fires can be extinguished with the equipment you have:
A - Ordinary combustibles - wood, paper, cloth
B - Flammable Liquids - gasoline, oil, grease
C - Electrical Equipment - appliances, computers, circuit breakers
  • Remember PASS. Pull Aim Squeeze Sweep
Pull - Pull the pin: this will unlock the operating lever on the extinguisher.
Aim - Aim low: Point the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire.
Squeeze - Squeeze the lever. This will discharge the extinguishing agent.
Sweep - Sweep from side to side: Carefully move toward the fire, sweeping the extinguisher across the fire until the flames appear to be extinguished.
