Pest Control
PURPOSETo explain roles and responsibilities for pest control in University facilities.
SCOPE
This instruction applies to University facilities which are maintained with state funds, and does not apply to operations such as Housing, Student Apartments, Food Services, University Hospital, Museum of Natural History.
PHILOSOPHY
University Plant Operations and Environmental Health and Safety, in recognition of potential employee chemical sensitivities, endeavor to minimize the application of pesticides unless no other solution is obvious, and then, only when pest control is likely with the application.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Department Heads: Ensure occupants recognize and maintain housekeeping standards which minimize pests. When occupant use of facilities requires formal pesticide applications – departments are responsible for costs incurred. Coordinate pest control applications with Plant Operations prior to contracting with applicators.
Department Employees: Help minimize pest attraction by disposing of waste properly, storing food properly, etc.
Plant Operations: Monitor for infestations. Provide trash removal services. Maintain physical facilities. Provide notification of pesticide application to impacted units – when application is coordinated through Plant Operations.
Environmental Health & Safety: Review available literature regarding health hazards prior to application. Investigate reports of employee complications with pesticide applications.
Stores and Receiving: Maintain a stock, for purchase, of mouse traps and ant traps for department use.
