Hazardous Materials Spills or Releases
OdorsAll odors are not created equal. Some odors can make some individuals nauseous and have no effect on others. While these odors are upsetting, they are not necessarily health hazards. Other odors are seriously hazardous to health, though they may be tolerable for a period of time. The best response to an odor is distance and fresh air. Contact EHS at 1-6590 for assistance with troubleshooting odors.
Fumes/Vapors/Gas leaks
Workplace health and safety regulations dictate that you know what hazardous materials are in use in your workplace. You should know if gas cylinders, etc., are in use and how to report leaks and releases when health and safety are at risk.
- If a vapor, fume or gas leak enters your workplace and you cannot determine the source, leave the area immediately.
- Post "DO NOT ENTER" sign and notify the proper response personnel:
- Monday through Friday 7:30 am - 4:30 pm Plant Operations 581-7221
- After 5:00pm, Weekends and Holidays Public Safety 585-2677
Chemical Spill Clean-up Procedures
- Attend to anyone who may have been contaminated.
- Notify occupants in the immediate area about the spill.
- Evacuate all nonessential personnel from the spill area.
- If the spilled material is flammable, turn off all ignition and heat sources; including magnetic stirrers.
- Avoid breathing vapors of the spilled material. If medically qualified and trained as required in the Respiratory Protection Program, use a respirator if necessary. Otherwise, evacuate and contact EHS at x1-6590 or call University Police at 5-COPS (5-2677) after 5:00pm.
- Ensure that the fume hood(s) is on. If in a non-clinical care building, open windows where possible to increase exhaust ventilation.
- Secure cleanup supplies. Ensure protective apparel is resistant to the spill material.
- Confine or contain the spill to a small area and clean up according to your Chemical Hygiene Plan.
Please see the Spill procedures in the Biosafety Manual.
