Universal Precautions

"Universal Precautions" or "Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions" for laboratories are itemized below. Universal Precautions are intended to prevent parenteral, mucous membrane, and nonintact skin exsposures to bloodborne pathogens. Immunization with HBV vaccine is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control as an important adjunct to Universal Precautions for workers who have exposures to blood.

Universal Precautions in The Lab
Assume that all patients are infectious for HIV and other bloodborne pathogens.

Whenever processing blood or body fluid specimens, wear gloves plus a face shield (or mask with glasses or goggles) if there is a likelihood of splattering. Wash hands when finished with processing specimens.

Place every specimen of blood or body fluid in a well constructed container with a secure lid to prevent leaking in transport.

Always use pipetting aids. Never put a pipette in your mouth.

Decontaminate all laboratory work surfaces with an appropriate chemical germacide after a spill of blood or other body fluids.

Decontaminate all laboratory work surfaces when activities are completed.

Limit use of needles and syringes to situations for which there are no other alternatives.

Decontaminate materials used in laboratory tests before reprocessing or place them into appropriately labeled biohazard bags for disposal by Environmental Health and Safety.

Always wash hands after completing laboratory activities, even if gloves were worn.

Remove all protective clothing (e.g.,lab coat, gown, mask) before leaving the laboratory.
