Radiation Safety Committees

The University of Utah’s Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) is the governing body for all aspects of radiation protection within the University, including all affiliated research, clinical, instructional and service units utilizing radiation sources in facilities owned or controlled by the University.

Things to Consider

Radiation Safety Committee (RSC)

The Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) promulgates policies, rules and procedures for the safe use of radiation sources. It has authority to oversee, review and audit the activities of the Radiation Safety Officer, the EHS Radiation Safety Division, and all users of university radiation sources.

The subcommittees under the RSC are:

  1. Medical Use Subcommittee of the Radiation Safety Committee (MUS-RSC): promulgates policies, rules and procedures for the use of radiation in the clinical environment. This subcommittee reports to the both RSC and Hospital Administration.
  2. Human Use Subcommittee of the Radiation Safety Committee (HUS-RSC) evaluates and approves or disapproves all proposed uses of ionizing radiation sources on or in humans for investigational or non-routine clinical procedures.

An associated committee of the RSC is the Radioactive Drug Research Committee (RDRC). Comprised of the same membership as the HUS-RSC, the RDRC evaluates and approves or disapproves of applications involving investigational or non-routine clinical uses of radioactive drugs without New Drug Applications (NDA) filed with the FDA or without Investigational New Drug (IND) numbers issued by the FDA. The RDRC reports directly to the United States Federal Drug Agency (FDA).
