Smoking Indoor Clean Air Act

Smoking on Campus: Complying with Utah’s Indoor Clean Air Act - As a state agency, the University of Utah is required to enforce the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act. Smoking is prohibited in all university buildings—whether leased, owned, or operated—as well as in state vehicles. Additionally, smoking is not allowed within 25 feet of any operable window, entrance, or air intake vent.

Things to Consider

Urns placed near building entrances are intended for extinguishing and disposing of smoking materials, not for use as designated smoking areas. With seasonal changes, more individuals tend to stay close to entrances rather than moving away, which can contribute to non-compliance.

Compliance and Responsibilities

Ensuring compliance with this policy is a shared responsibility:

  • Supervisors should educate employees on these restrictions.
  • Department administrators should inform students of these guidelines.
  • All campus members should cooperate by following the rules and encouraging others to do the same.

What You Can Do

✔ Step away from building entrances and air intakes before smoking.

✔ Use designated urns for proper disposal of smoking materials.

✔ Help spread awareness by sharing these guidelines with others.
