Hazard Communication


In accordance with OSHA’s Communication Standard, the University has established a written hazard communication program to ensure that employees with exposure or potential exposure to hazardous chemicals are provided with appropriate health and safety information.

In accordance with OSHA’s Communication Standard, the University has established a written hazard communication program to ensure that employees with exposure or potential exposure to hazardous chemicals are provided with appropriate health and safety information. The program requirements dictate that an updated chemical inventory be completed annually, a personal protective equipment (PPE) assessment be completed for the use of hazardous chemicals, chemical containers must be labeled with the contents and associated hazards, safety data sheets (SDS) must be available for every hazardous chemical used, employees required to work with hazardous chemicals receive training on safe use of the chemical.

The written hazard communication program applies to all areas where employees have the potential to be exposed to hazardous chemicals during their work or in a foreseeable emergency.

Laboratories covered under a written chemical hygiene plan need only comply with the requirements for maintaining container labels, the requirements for providing labels and safety data sheets when transporting or shipping hazardous chemicals outside the laboratory, and the requirement to maintain safety data sheets that are received with shipments of hazardous chemicals.
