Respiratory Protection

The University of Utah respiratory protection program outlines the rules and procedures necessary to protect employees from exposure to potential airborne hazards in the workplace. The program describes procedures for identifying airborne hazards, selection and proper use of air-purifying respirators, when necessary, medical evaluations and fit testing of employees required to wear a respirator, and record keeping requirements.

Things to Consider

The program applies to all employees who are required to wear air-purifying respirators to prevent exposure to airborne contaminants.  It also applies to employees who voluntarily wear respirators although respirators are not required. This program does not cover the use of atmosphere supplying respirators in oxygen deficient atmospheres, high concentration atmospheres, or unknown atmospheres.

The University of Utah Respiratory Protection Program is in two parts:  The base program details universal required program elements and can be found here: [link to base program – Respiratory-Protection-SOP-04.14.2017-signed.pdf (d2vxd53ymoe6ju.cloudfront.net)] and an area specific program which details required program elements specific to the area in which a specific employee or group of employees works.

Required elements

Development of an area specific written Energy Control (LO/TO) Program – An area specific plan template is available in the University’s Safety Administrative Management System (SAM): https://ehs.utah.edu/safety-administrative-management-system/

  • Completion of hazard assessment to determine if respiratory protection is needed and if so, provide recommendation for type of respirator to be worn
  • Medical evaluations for employees required to wear respiratory protection
  • Fit testing to ensure proper fit and function of respirator
  • Training on proper use of respirators
  • Annual Program evaluation for continued effectiveness and regulatory compliance
