Fall Protection Program

The purpose of the Fall Protection program is to prevent falls to lower levels or through holes and openings in walking/working surfaces. The program is designed to enable employees to recognize fall hazards on the job and establish procedures in order to prevent falls.

Things to Consider

The requirements of the University of Utah Fall Protection Program apply to all University employees assigned duties that require them to work at unprotected heights greater than 4 feet.

The University of Utah Fall Protection Program is in two parts:  The base program details universal required program elements and can be found here: [link to base program – currently located here: Fall-Protection-Program-05.30.17.pdf (d2vxd53ymoe6ju.cloudfront.net)] and an area specific program which details required program elements specific to the area in which a specific employee or group of employees works.

Required Program Elements

  • Survey of work environments to identify potential fall hazards and personnel at risk
  • Development of an area specific written Energy Control (LO/TO) Program – An area specific plan template is available in the University’s Safety Administrative Management System (SAM): https://ehs.utah.edu/safety-administrative-management-system
  • Creation of standard operating procedures for each area requiring fall protection for inclusion the area specific program
  • Annual training for employees on program elements and procedures for fall protection
