Field Safety

Field work in remote locations requires a robust field safety plan, developed and in place prior to beginning field work. The field safety plan brings together information such as site details, hazards which may be present and how to mitigate those hazards, risk assessment results, emergency procedures, communications plan, etc.

Things to Consider

It is well known that one of the most important phases of field research/work is the preparation done before you leave for the field. A critical element of that preparation is the field safety plan.

The Safety Administrative Management (SAM) system provides a tool to assist in the creation of a robust field safety plan.

The completed field safety plan must be in the system prior to leaving for field work and made available to any departmental contacts listed on the plan and a must be maintained at the field location and in all vehicles associated with the project for the duration of field operations.  If reliable internet access is available and the plan can be accessed electronically this is acceptable.  If reliable electronic accessibility is not available, then printed hardcopies of the plan must be distributed as described.
