Stormwater Pollution Prevention: Keep Our Water Clean
Only clean water should go down storm drains. Follow these best practices to prevent pollution:
- Perform vehicle maintenance in designated areas, not in parking lots.
- Clean up drips and leaks
- All oils, including edible oils, are environmental hazards.
- Store oil containers in secondary containment to prevent spills.
- Keep storage containers out of traffic flow and tightly closed when not in use.
- Ensure that everyone in the area is aware of stored materials and knows how to respond in case of a spill.
- Have a spill response kit readily available.

Prohibited Pollutants
Under the Stormwater Management Plan, the University of Utah strictly prohibits the initiation, continuation, or conduct of any illegal, non-stormwater discharges into the storm drain system. Pollutants include, but are not limited to:
- Household hazardous waste (kitchen and bathroom cleaners, etc.)
- Oil and other vehicle fluids
- Pet waste
- Trash, litter, or debris (e.g., grass clippings)
- Construction site pollutants (e.g., concrete washout, sediment)
