All new or modified sources of air pollution require an air permit before construction begins.
However, not all equipment is required to be included in the University's Title V Air Permit.
Any type of stationary, meaning bolted to the ground and unmovable, combustion equipment will
likely need air permitting. See examples of various types of equipment requiring air permitting listed below.
Typical Equipment Types Requiring Air Permitting:
Natural Gas, Diesel, or Dual Fuel Boilers; Diesel or Natural Gas Emergency Generators;
Diesel-fired Emergency Fire Pumps; Woodshop Dust Collectors (Baghouse); Paint Booths;
University owned Fuel Storage Tanks; Any Other Stationary Combustion Equipment;
Any other volatile organic compound (VOC) or hazardous air pollutant (HAP) producing equipment
Equipment that typically does NOT Require Air Permitting:
Water heaters for bathroom, kitchen, or lab sink use; Kitchen water boilers; Comfort space heaters;
Bunsen burners; Battery powered or mobile emergency generators; Lab fume hoods
